Online Upanishads Study Weekend
27th and 28th January
(Postponed from May 23)
During the weekend, the study will be based on the Brihadāranyaka Upanishad, the “Great Forest Upanishad”, so called for its length and profundity.
The fourth chapter of the second part contains the well-known dialogue between Yājnavalkya and his wife Maitreyī. Yājnavalkya, having decided to renounce the world and retire to the forest, offered all his wealth to Maitreyī. She refused to accept it, desiring instead to know from Yājnavalkya about immortality.
We will study this key passage of the Upanishad, referring back to the original Sanskrit to enlarge our understanding. Knowledge of Sanskrit is not necessary as full guidance into the meanings of words will be provided.
We will also study Shankara’s illuminating commentary on two of the verses.
There will be chanting of one verse in Sanskrit and we will have a chance to reflect quietly on its meaning.
All philosophy students are welcome. Attendance can be for either or both days.
The meetings will take place on Zoom with 3 sessions a day:
9 am to 10:15 am, 10:45 am to noon and 2pm to 3.30 pm.
Study papers and Zoom Link will be sent out a couple of days before the weekend.
The charge is £30.
